The COVID-19 pandemic created many challenges that needed to be addressed quickly, including the transition of students learning in the classroom to learning through an electronic device.

School boards across the province have been working diligently to ensure students have the technology resources they need to participate in the new distance learning environment. In Waterloo Region, 1,500 families were identified by the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) as requiring financial support to access e-learning technology.

To help address this challenge, Smart Waterloo Region facilitated a partnership with The Cowan Foundation, The Fairmount Foundation, Astley Family Foundation, and Lyle S. Hallman Foundation to cover the costs for internet devices, like hot spots and high-speed modems, as well as monthly service fees for families in financial need through until the end of the summer. The Foundation is pleased to support this initiative to help ensure no student is left behind during these challenging times.
